Duleep Trophy 2024-25: Shreyas Iyer fails on red-ball cricket comeback

Duleep Trophy 2024-25: Shreyas Iyer fails on red-ball cricket comeback

New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer endured a day to forget on his red-ball comeback, falling cheaply on Day 1 of the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 match between India C and India D at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of the India C squad, won the toss in overcast conditions as India’s 2024-25 domestic season got underway in Anantapur.

India C bowlers were on the money right from the start, as Anshul Kamboj sent Atharva Taide back to the pavilion in the opening over.

Things went from bad to worse for India D as skipper Shreyas Iyer was dismissed in the sixth over by Royal Challengers Bengaluru fast bowler Vijaykumar Vyshak. The RCB pacer then got rid of another star batter in Devdutt Padikkal for a duck in the same over to leave India D reeling.

In the very next over, Yash Dubey, the opening batter became Kamboj’s second victim. Ricky Bhui and Srikar Bharat followed their teammates in the dressing room as India D lost their six wickets for 48 runs in 20.2 overs.

Iyer fails on red-ball return

While he will get plenty of chances in the coming days, Iyer would have liked to deliver on his first shot at redeeming himself in red-ball cricket.

The 29-year-old has endured a horrendous 2024 with injuries and indiscipline resulting in his stocks plummeting to an all-time low.

Iyer last played a Test for India in February against England in Visakhapatnam. A pair of 20+ scores was his last contribution for India in red-ball cricket. He was soon dropped from the BCCI central contract list for not representing Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal last season.

The selectors will closely monitor the performances of Indian cricket’s A-listers participating in the Duleep Trophy and will also trace suitable backup options to frontline stars.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill-led India A elected to bowl first against Abhimanyu Easwaran’s India B at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
