New Delhi: Carabao Cup’s quarter-final round began on Wednesday night with six of the eight teams looking for that final four spot. The midweek clash comes just days after the final game of matchday 16 in the Premier League. All eight teams compete in the top flight of English football in the quarter-finals.
Arsenal hosted Crystal Palace after having beaten Preston in the final-16. The two will again meet in the weekend for their Premier League clash. Premier League table’s top-most placed side, Liverpool, faces the bottom-most placed side, Southampton. Newcastle hosted Brentford, who have been joint on the points in the Premier League.

Newcastle hosted the side right above them in the Premier League, Brentford. For the Magpies, Sandro Tonali turned out to be the hero of the night, scoring twice in the first half. Tonali dictated the pace of the game and displayed his ability to slow the speed of the game when required. Eddie Howe’s side were with 2-0 lead as they headed into the break and didn’t look like they would hold back from here on.
Fabian Schar’s 69th-minute goal was enough for the side to head into the semi-final of the EFL Cup. Yoane Wissa scored for Brentford in the stoppage time, but the goal deficit was too much for the Bees to recover from. Brentford never gave any resistance or competition to their opponents. After the game, Howe was delighted, noting that the side’s attack had regained its rhythm and creative flair.

Arsenal were almost immediately in a spot of bother when Jean-Phillipe Mateta scored in the fourth minute of the game. For the whole duration of the first half, the Gunners failed to score and didn’t create a lot of chances. However, the story flipped in favour of the hosts in the second half when Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal in the 54th minute, followed by two more in just 27 minutes.
Martin Odegaard made two assists, while Bukayo Saka was involved in one of the three goals. For the Brazilian, these were his first goals in Emirates in almost a year and only the second time he has scored this season. Eddie Nketiah scored in the 85th minute,e but Palace didn’t seem to have the drive to go for the equalizer. The result has left Mikel Arteta happy and urged Jesus to maintain consistency as it would benefit Arsenal in the season.

Liverpool came to the quarter-final clash after a close call with Fulham over the weekend. The Reds have drawn all of their last two Premier League weekends. Simon Rusk took charge of the struggling Southampton after Russell Martin was sacked at the start of this week. They have only won once in the Premier League this season and conceded five times in their weekend loss to Tottenham.
Liverpool went into the break with a two-goal lead, with Darwin Nunez opening the scoring for the visitors before Harvey Elliot scored his first goal of the season. Arne Slot watched the game from the press box as he was serving his touchline suspension for three yellow cards. It looked like it would be an easy win for Liverpool. However, Southampton were much more organised and played well in the second half, with Cameron Archer scoring the first goal for the side. Archer had almost equalized but failed as the hosts, though created some chances, struggled to finish strong.
Liverpool take narrow win against Southampton heading into semi-finals as Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus scores hattrick to beat Crystal Palace, while Newcastle take 3-1 win against Brentford. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
