Emotions at peak as Rohit Sharma eats soil from Barbados pitch after Team India clinch T20 World Cup 2024 – WATCH

New Delhi: India skipper Rohit Sharma couldn’t keep his emotions in check after leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday. As Team India edged past South Africa in the marquee final clash by seven runs, the Indian camp erupted in joy bringing out a plethora of emotions. Rohit was so overjoyed and full of emotions that he made a brilliant winning gesture amid the wild celebrations.

Like Novak Djokovic famously ate a strand of grass after one of his triumphs at Wimbledon, a heavy-hearted Rohit went to the pitch and put a speck of soil in his mouth. The moment was captured by the ICC in a video that was posted on the internet on Sunday. The clip has gone viral as fans call it a respectful and goosebumps-giving moment. The retiring Indian skipper showed respect towards the land where he made the triumph.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli announce T20I retirement

While it was a day to celebrate for the whole of India, the two stalwarts of Indian cricket Virat Kohli and Rohit dropped bombshells of hanging their boots on the T20 internationals. There was word around the corner before the start of the marquee event that it might be the last outing for both Rohit and Kohli in a T20 World Cup and the two veterans put the rumours to rest, setting the record straight.

Kohli was the first to make the announcement while receiving the Player of the Match award for his match-winning 59-ball 76, saying that it was his final T20 World Cup and his final T20 game for India. A few hours later, at the post-match press conference, Rohit declared that it was his final appearance for India in T20Is as well. Rohit is the only player to have played all the editions of the T20 showpiece as he won his second T20 World Cup on Saturday after lifting it with the iconic 2007 squad.

With the nervy win, India put an end to their long-standing knockout hoodoo and also ended the 11-year-long ICC trophy drought. They won a World Cup after 13 years and the duo of Rohit and Kohli would be fondly remembered as the giants of T20 cricket for India.
