New Delhi: Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed England vice-captain Harry Brook on Day 2 of the first Test match at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. Brook batted brilliantly and scored 56 runs off 73 balls.

He was dismissed by Jayasuriya on the first delivery of the 40th over. Jayasuriya was bowling his second spell to a well-set Brook. The Sri Lankan spinner pitched the ball outside the off stump and got the ball to turn back in. Brook got squared up on the back foot and by the time he tried to put his bat, the ball passed the outside edge to knock the off stump.

England in lead on Day 2

Hosts England did a fantastic job with the ball on day 1 and restricted Sri Lanka to 236 runs. The Sri Lankan team were in trouble but important contributions from Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant Milan Rathnayake helped the team to put a good total on the scoreboard.

England’s openers added 22 runs on Day 1 before the match was stopped due to the bad light. Asitha Fernando dismissed Ben Duckett (18) just a few minutes after the start of the Day 2. Asitha also got the wicket of skipper Ollie Pope cheaply and England was in trouble.

Joe Root (42), Dan Lawrence (30) and a brilliant fifty from Harry Brook steadied England’s ship. Asitha Fernando took 3 wickets and Prabath Jayasuriya took two wickets for Sri Lanka in the match. Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes also stitched a crucial 52-run partnership and helped England to take the lead.

On Day 2, England batter Joe Root became the leading run-scorer of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal. The England batter now has 1065 runs in 14 Test matches, including three centuries and five half-centuries. Jaiswal has scored 1028 runs in nine matches played so far in the WTC 2023-25 cycle.
