New Delhi: The government has said that there has been enhanced engagement of female workforce participation in economic activity. The Ministry of Labour & Employment report stated that the women from the rural belt also propelled economic growth. The “data related to female employment indicators in the last six years points to enhanced engagement of women in economic activity, declining unemployment rate, upward trend of educated women in workforce, and a steady increase in earnings across employment categories. A sharp rise in female labour force participation in rural areas stems from increased participation in economic activities,” the Centre said.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has been releasing official data sources of employment/unemployment indicators in India since 2017-18. It is known as the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).
The PLFS data shows that the Indian labour market indicators have improved in the last six years:
Worker Population Ratio (WPR) increased from 46.8 per cent in 2017-18 to 58.2 per cent in 2023-24.
Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) surged from 49.8 per cent to 60.1 per cent during the above-mentioned period.
Unemployment Rate declined sharply from 6.0 per cent to 2 per cent.
Increased female employment indicators
The PLFS data shows that there has been an increase in female employment and female participation in economic activity across various categories, including rural and urban. Female Labour Force Participation Rate increased by 23 percentage points between 2017-18 and 2023-24 (24.6% in 2017-18 and 47.6% in 2023-24) indicating a rising contribution of women to rural production. There is also the belief that this data is now being better captured by PLFS survey.
Increased female employment indicators
The data released by PLFS shows female participation has significantly increased in economic activity across various categories, including rural and urban. As per the PLFS, the rural Female Labour Force Participation Rate increased by 23 percentage points between 2017-18 and 2023-24, which pints at rising contribution of women to rural production.
WPR for women doubled from 22 per cent in 2017-18 to 40.3 per cent in 2023-24
LFPR for women increased from 23.3 per cent to 41.7 per cent
Unemployment Rate reduced from 5.6 per cent to 3.2 per cent
Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data showed improved employment indicators in regards to women over the last six years.
