New Delhi: England men’s cricket team white-ball skipper Jos Buttler on Thursday was ruled out of the upcoming T20 International series against Australia. He sustained a calf injury on his right leg, which is likely to enforce him out of the following five-match ODI series.
Rivals England and Australia will play three T20I matches (September 11-15) and five ODI matches (September 19-29) before the two teams will face Pakistan in different formats.
In a media release issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Buttler was ruled out of the T20I series and was termed ‘doubtful’ over his participation in the ODI leg. Buttler’s Lancashire teammate Philip Salt will lead England in the three-match T20Is. Surrey pacer Jamie Overton was named as replacement for the Three Lions captain in the squad.
Despite the injury concerns, Buttler currently remains the captain of England’s ODI squad until further development.

Brendon McCullum given additional responsibility for England
England Test head coach Brendon McCullum has recently extended his role with the white-ball setup as well. The former New Zealand skipper will take charge of the T20Is and ODIs from January 2025 onwards with his contract extended till the end of 2027.
However, the 42-year-old won’t lead England’s coaching staff against Australia in the upcoming home series. Former England cricketer Marcus Trescothick, who was appointed interim coach of England’s white-ball set up after the departure of Australia-based Matthew Mott, will assume the head coach role against Australia this month.
