Premier League: Five players that needed a transfer in January but didn’t get one

New Delhi: The winter transfer window is over as the deadline passed last night and for most players, the dust is starting to settle. But as always, not everyone gets the move they want or the move they desperately need. While some secured high-profile transfers or last-minute loan deals, others were left stranded, stuck at clubs where they’re unwanted, out of favor, or simply craving a fresh start elsewhere.

For every Marcus Rashford, who managed to escape a difficult situation, there are countless others still waiting for an opportunity that never came. Whether it was a collapsed deal, unrealistic demands, or just bad timing, these players now face an uncertain few months ahead. Of course, some might still have hope, with leagues like Turkey and the Netherlands keeping their windows open a little longer, but for many, the focus has already shifted to the summer.

In this article, we take a look at five players who were left behind, watching the window slam shut without securing their much-needed move. Whether they were hoping for a loan, a permanent transfer, or just a way out, they now find themselves stuck, at least for another six months till the transfer window opens once again in the summer.

5) Sergio Reguilón

You might be forgiven for forgetting that Sergio Reguilón is still at Tottenham, such has been his time at the London club. The Spaniard joined Spurs to much fanfare as the Lilywhites beat several other clubs to sign him but thing went downhill after that. He failed to establish himself as a regular starter at the club and went out on several loan moves to clubs like Brentford, Atletico Madrid and Manchester United.

He has spent the current season at Spurs but has only made five appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side. He made his first league appearance in December despite not being injured which showcases how far down the order he is. The club have tried to offload him before but haven’t been able to get him off the books with it looking likely that Reguilón will spend another season wrapped up in uncertainty before hopefully getting a move in the summer.

4) James McAtee

Manchester City have an extremely talented academy that has produced world beaters like Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Jeremie Frimpong and Jadon Sancho among others. The latest to come out of their academy is another talented youngster in James McAtee. The 22-year-old returned from a successful two loan spell from Brentford this season to be a part of the first team but he has barely played for the Cityzens.

He’s made only 15 appearances amounting to just over 500 minutes despite impressing for the club. He’s played less than 90 minutes in the Premier League in seven appearances which is hurting his progression. The club are scared to face another Cole Palmer situation and hence blocked any loan exits for the player in this window. If Pep doesn’t give him more game time for the rest of the season, it’ll be an incredibly frustrating one for the player.

3) Casemiro

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro quickly became a liability for the Red Devils, something that nobody saw coming. The Brazilian joined the club on a huge contract which made him one of the highest earners at the club and he repaid that during his first season. However, since his season year at the club, things have gone massively downhill and the spiral has continued this season as well. He featured somewhat regularly under Erik Ten Hag but has fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

In just 14 league appearances, Casemiro has played less than 900 minutes for the club, averaging less than 60 minutes per game. He’s been an unused substitute in nine of the club’s last 11 games, indicating that he isn’t a part of the head coach’s plans this season. The club are desperate to get him off the books as he’s currently earing £350,000-a-week and isn’t offering anything close to justifying that on the field but his wages have been a stumbling block for his exit.

2) Matheus Cunha

Matheus Cunha finds himself on this list for a vastly different reason than the others mentioned alongside him. The Brazilian attacker has been one of the best players in the league this season and is the crown jewel of the current Wolves squad. He is single handedly keeping their hopes of survival alive, having scored 11 and assisted four in 23 Premier League games for the club. However, it’s clear to see that Cunha is much above Wolves’ current level and he deserves to be playing in a better team.

At one point in the window, it did seem like Cunha would be leaving the club after talks of a new contract stalled. Both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest were linked with making a move for the striker but it didn’t materialize in the end and Cunha signed his new deal. The 25-year-old needed to leave the club to further his own career and progress but opted to stay and help his side fight for promotion. If Wolves do end up going down at the end of the season though, Cunha would have no troubles finding suitors in the summer.

1) Christopher Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku has been a regular feature for Chelsea in the cup competitions but has failed to establish himself in the Premier League under Enzo Maresca. Signed for the club last year, he faced constant injury issues last season that derailed his campaign and he was expected to shine for the club in this season. However, he’s failed to dislodge Nicolas Jackson from the starting lineup, despite being the club’s top scorer in all competitions.

He’s made 20 appearances for the Blues in the league but has played less than 450 minutes in the league, averaging about 22 minutes per game. Nkunku wanted to leave the club in the window after growing frustrated with the lack of game time but a move to Bayern Munich or Manchester United never came to fruition and he ended up staying. A move away would’ve been the best case for all parties involved but not that he’s stayed, we can only hope that this yields better results in the league.
