New Delhi: Erik Ten Hag is close to finalising a deal to become the new manager of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, stepping in to replace Xabi Alonso. The Dutch coach has been without a job since his departure from Manchester United in October and now looks ready to make his return to football management in Germany.

Ten Hag’s connection with German football isn’t new. He spent two years leading Bayern Munich’s reserve team early in his coaching career. This experience could serve him well as he prepares to take charge of Leverkusen. The club recently enjoyed great success under Alonso, winning their first Bundesliga title in 2024 without losing a single league match. Additionally, Leverkusen clinched the German Cup last season, completing a rare domestic double.

Despite not being able to match the previous season’s high standards, Leverkusen still secured second place in the Bundesliga, even earning a spot in the next season’s Champions League. This adds up will make Ten Hag’s job a bit challenging as he has to maintain and build on the success left by Alonso, who is expected to take on the role of Real Madrid’s new manager. As per a report by The Athletic, Leverkusen reportedly reached an agreement in principle to appoint Ten Hag with the deal expected to be finalised soon. The contract is believed to run until 2027.

Rebuilding amidst a big squad overhaul

Ten Hag will face a significant task beyond just stepping into Alonso’s shoes. The squad is likely to undergo considerable changes this summer as key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jonathan Tah are rumoured to be leaving, while other players could also move on. Managing this transition and keeping the team competitive will be a critical part of Ten Hag’s role.

For Ten Hag, the opportunity will give him a chance to make a fresh start following a turbulent spell at Old Trafford. Although he led the Red Devils to the FA Cup finals and the League Cup during his two-season tenure with Man United. He was sacked in late October after a poor run of results. The Dutchman had previously decided to wait until summer before returning to management, having already turned down several offers during this time frame.

Former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas was also considered for the job but decided to remain with his current club, Como. If Ten Hag can navigate the challenges ahead and guide Leverkusen through this transition, it could be the start of a strong new chapter in his managerial career.

Erik Ten Hag is poised to take over as Bayer Leverkusen manager, succeeding Xabi Alonso and facing a challenging rebuild ahead of the new Bundesliga season.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
