IND vs BAN: Chennai boys light up Chepauk after big guns misfire

New Delhi: Team India got off to a poor start in the cool Chennai morning with many recognised batters failing to score runs against a sensational fast bowling display by Bangladesh. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s brilliant knock helped India to get out of the trouble as hosts scored 339/6 on Day 1 of the first Test.

Failure of star batters

The Indian team was playing their first Test match after a gap of five months and fans expected the batters to score plenty of runs. But that was not the case on the first day of the Test match in Chennai. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul all struggled to score runs against Bangladesh’s fast bowlers on the red-soil pitch. All four batters played poor shots and threw their wickets cheaply which was not expected from the experienced campaigners.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud sent Rohit back to the pavilion for just six runs on the first ball of the sixth over. The Indian captain defended a good length ball with soft hands but the ball seamed away and got an outside edge of his bat and Shanto took an easy catch with both hands at second slip.

Mahmud got his next wicket by dismissing Shubman Gill on a duck. He tried to flick the leg-side delivery but got an inside edge and Litton Das made no mistake behind the wicket. Mahmud dismissed Virat Kohli on six runs and picked up his third wicket of the match. The star batter tried to drive a full outside-off delivery but only managed to get an outside edge and handed an easy catch to the keeper.

KL Rahul walked out to bat No.6 after Mahmud dismissed Pant on 39 but he threw his wicket away after facing 51 balls and got out on 16 runs. Jaiswal and Pant stitched 62-run partnership for the team.

Chennai boys shined on Day 1

Ravichandran Ashwin (Local boy) and Ravindra Jadeja (CSK player) stitched a brilliant unbeaten 195-run partnership for the seventh wicket and brought India back into the match. India were 144/6 when both batters walked out to bat and took the team 339 runs with sensational batting.

Ashwin notched up his sixth Test century, scoring an unbeaten 102 runs off 122 balls while Jadeja also scored an unbeaten 86 runs off 117 deliveries. Both batters will look to add some more runs on the scoreboard on the start of Day 2 in Chennai.

A 195-run partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took India from 144/6 to 339/6 on day 1 of the opening Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
