New Delhi: India’s fate in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 hangs by a threat despite their six-wicket win against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday. India suffered a crushing 58-run defeat against New Zealand in their opening game of the tournament which came as a huge blow to their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.
India are currently in the 4th spot on the Group A points table with 1 win and 1 loss from their first two matches. Their net run rate took a big hit after their 58-run loss against the Kiwis as it currently stands at -1.217. Despite having faced defeat against them in the opener, India will be cheering for New Zealand when they take on defending champions Australia in their 2nd match of the tournament on Tuesday, October 08.
How New Zealand beating Australia will benefit India
Harmanpreet Kaur & Co. will be watching closely when Australia take on New Zealand at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Tuesday. New Zealand are currently sitting on the top of the Group A points table with 2 points and a net run rate of +2.900 while Australia are 2nd with 2 points and a net run rate of +1.908 having beaten Sri Lanka in their first game.
India need to win their remaining two matches to stand a chance at making it to the semi-finals. If New Zealand manage to beat Australia on Tuesday it will help India’s cause. The Kiwis will move to 4 points after the win and will remain in the top spot while Australia will be left with 2 points after two matches.
If India manage to beat Australia and Sri Lanka in their remaining two games, they will finish with a total of six points with 3 wins from 4 matches. On the other hand, Alyssa Healy-led Australia will only manage to get 4 points if they lose against New Zealand and are beaten by India in their next game. Australia will finish 3rd with 4 points and will get eliminated.
However, if Australia manage to beat New Zealand in Sharjah on Tuesday it won’t be good news for India. The Women in Blue will have to then beat Australia at any cost to stay in contention. If Australia defeat the Kiwis and also win their last game against Pakistan, they will finish with a total of six points. Meanwhile, New Zealand can also finish with six points if they beat Sri Lanka and Pakistan in their last two matches.
In such a scenario, India will not only have to win their remaining two games but also increase their net run rate drastically to ensure they can qualify for the semi-finals after finishing with six points. A loss against Australia in their next game will all but end India’s chances of making it to the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
