Explained: How PCOS affects your chances of getting pregnant

New Delhi: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women’s fertility, especially in Indian women who are genetically more susceptible. Characterized by irregular menstrual cycles and hormonal imbalances, PCOS often leads to infertility. However, advancements in treatments like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) offer a solution. Early diagnosis and personalized care are vital, as PCOS is linked to long-term health risks, including diabetes and heart disease, in addition to fertility challenges.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Prinka Bajaj, Fertility Specialist at Oasis Fertility, explained how PCOS takes a toll on fertility and lowers the odds of pregnancy.

“Diagnosis of PCOS is typically made when at least two of the following criteria are met: signs of elevated androgen levels, such as excess facial or body hair, irregular menstrual cycles, or polycystic ovaries visible on an ultrasound. Blood tests are used to measure hormone levels such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and androgen levels. Blood sugar and insulin levels are also checked,” said Dr Bajaj.

IVF has become a vital option for women with PCOS who face infertility, especially after other ovulation induction methods have not succeeded. In IVF, fertilization occurs outside the body, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus. This process involves the retrieval of both eggs and sperm, which are then fertilized in a lab. IVF can be highly effective, with pregnancy success rates reaching up to 50% per cycle, especially in younger women with good ovarian reserves.

However, IVF is not without its challenges. Women with PCOS are at higher risk for ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH), which is critical for IVF success. Additionally, the risk of multiple births and the high cost of treatment can be barriers for some women. However with advancements in IVF techniques, regular monitoring during IVF stimulation, and medications to prevent OHSS, these risks can be reduced to a bare minimum. The chances of twin pregnancy can also be reduced by transferring a single embryo into the uterus.

Recently advanced treatment methods like CAPA IVM (a drug-free treatment) can be an alternative to traditional IVF for women with PCOS with comparable outcomes.

PCOS presents unique challenges, especially in terms of fertility. While the condition cannot be cured, IVF and other fertility treatments offer a safe and viable solution for overcoming PCOS-related infertility with a high success rate. Continued research and improved understanding of the disorder will not only enhance treatment options but also improve overall health outcomes for women with PCOS. By adopting a personalized and comprehensive approach, we can help more women achieve their dreams of parenthood while maintaining their health and well-being.
