New Delhi: Team India opened its account in the Group A points table of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 as they clinched their maiden win in the marquee event after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by six wickets. India’s chances for the knockout stages were dented a bit after their 58-run loss against New Zealand in the opener but with the emphatic victory over the neighbours, there has been a revival of the opportunities and their campaign as well.
After the win, India clinched two points and are currently placed in the fourth spot in the table, having a win and a loss out of the two games played. The top three teams are New Zealand, Australia, and Pakistan – who have the same stats. The Kiwis and the Aussies both bagged their opening clashes while Sri Lanka is at the bottom with two losses in two games played so far.
Things are getting exciting from her for all the five teams, specially for India and Pakistan, who are currently balanced with a win and loss. Despite the win, India Women’s run-rate remains below that of Pakistan’s and it is understood that only the top two teams from both the groups will enter the semi-finals.
Here’s a quick look at what are India’s chances of making it into the semis as of now –
How can India qualify for semis of WT20 WC 2024?
With two group-stage games left for India, they surely need to win both of those to strengthen their chances of making in into the semifinals. Looking at the table, India can reach a maximum of six points. If that turns out to be the case, and if New Zealand defeat Australia, six points should be enough for India Eves to go through to the semis given Pakistan win only one of its remaining fixtures.
If it comes to both Pakistan and India winning their remaining games and New Zealand beat Australia, then it will be a three-way tie on six points which will be resolved by the Net Run Rate (NRR).
But… if India go down against Australia which is their last group stage fixture (after beating Sri Lanka), their qualification hopes will heavily rely on other results going their way. This means, India would need New Zealand to lose against both Australia and Pakistan or would need Australia to go down against New Zealand and Pakistan. This scenario would mean that three teams will be tied on four points and NRR will have to determine the second qualifier from the group.
