EXPLAINED: Jose Mourinho’s ban and fine for comments about Turkish match officials

New Delhi: Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho has been reprimanded with a one-match ban and fined following his tirade about Turkish football. In his rant, he mentioned that he was fighting “the system” and felt that officials had prejudice against his team. The Turkish Football Federation’s disciplinary board have fined €15,000 for accusing the referee and match officials of impartiality.

In their ruling, they described Mourinho’s comments as not in the correct spirit of football. The former Chelsea manager has been banned for one match for his rant and for displaying unsporting behaviour against opposing fans. The ban will prevent him from entering his side’s dressing room. The 61-year-old manager was seen sprinting and even attempting to slide onto the pitch after his side won 3-2 in a high-stakes game.

Mourinho will serve his ban when Fenerbahce play Sivasspor. In his debut season with Fenerbahce, the former Manchester United manager has questioned the Turkish league’s integrity and also noted that international fans won’t watch the league. Further he felt the club hadn’t given him a proper insight into how the league works.

Mourinho had been displeased with Trabzonspor being awarded penalties, with both of them coming after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) interference. Further, he felt that the side should have been given a spot-kick before Sofyan Ambrat’s goal 12 minutes into the stoppage time.

Mourinho was in the stands during Fenerbahce’s 3-1 loss to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, serving a one-game ban after receiving a red car when his side played Man United. After the draw, Mourinho mentioned that he would rather lead a team which isn’t part of any UEFA competition. The Portuguese said that if a low-ranked team in England needed a coach a couple of years later, he would be interested.

Mourinho took the helm of the Turkish club back in June, with his main assignment at Fenerbahce was to take the team back to the top of the table after failing to win the league title since 2014. In the Super Lig, after matchday 10, Fenerbahce are placed third and are currently trailing the leader of the table, Galatasaray, by five points.

Following a close Fenerbahce’s 3-2 win, Jose Mourinho expressed his displeasure over match official standards in Turkish football.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
