New Delhi: Amid the spread of dengue and Mpox cases, the first death due to Diptheria has been reported in Ferozepur Punjab. After the death of a 3-year-old in Punjab due to Diptheria, health officials have raised the alarms. To detect the cases, a comprehensive survey of the area has been initiated by health officials. According to reports, the three-year-old of Basti Awa Wali in Ferozepur city was being treated at the Guru Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot on October 8. But is Diphtheria and is it dangerous?

What is Diphtheria?

According to Cleveland Clinic, diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Corynebacterium diphtheriae. This bacterium releases a toxin which leads to a build-up of grey tissue in the throat that eventually leads to problems like swallowing and breathing.

In hotter climates, patients with diphtheria might develop skin sores that will not heal and may be covered with grey tissue. Reports say the disease is considered to be endemic in many parts of the world, including Asia, the Dominican Republic, Eastern Europe, Haiti, the South Pacific and the Middle East.

How does diphtheria spread?

One can get infected with diphtheria through airborne droplets that mainly contain bacteria or by touching something that has bacteria on it. Moreover, there is also a possibility that an infected person could spread the disease via an open sore touched by someone else or touching the clothes that an infected person has touched.

How are at higher risk?

As per the report of Cleveland Clinic, anyone who has not administered the vaccine and is exposed to the diphtheria virus can get infected by the infection.

Symptoms of diphtheria

Throat pain.
Weakness or fatigue.
Fever.
Swollen neck glands.
Difficulting to breathe because the tissues obstruct the nose and throat region
Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
Nerve, kidney
Heart problems (if the bacteria enters your bloodstream).
