Explained: What is Oropouche virus a rare diease that claimed world’s first-ever death in Brazil

New Delhi: World’s first-ever death from Oropouche virus have been recorded in Brazil. Oropouche virus is an unknown disease that is spread through the bites of infected midges and mosquitoes. According to the Brazil Healthy Ministry, two women, aged 30 years old on Thursday died in Bahia from the virus. As per some reports, the symptoms were similar to those of dengue and malaria or other vector-borne diseases that are often misunderstood as Oropouche.

What is the Oropouche virus?

Oropouche virus belongs to the Simbu serogroup of the viral genus Orthobunyavirus in the Peribunyaviridae family. The virus was first detected in 1955 in a febrile forest worker in a village in Trinidad and Tobago known as Vega de Oropouch, near the Oropouche River, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Earlier in 2000, the Oropouche virus was reported in Brazil, Panama and Peru, while cases have been reported in animals being infected also noted in Colombia and Trinidad during this time.

In the past 25 years, cases of the Oropouche virus have been found in countries like the Amazon region, including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, and Peru.

How does the virus manifest?

According to the CDC, the incubation time for The symptoms of Oropouche virus disease can be similar to the symptoms of dengue chikungunya, or Zika viruses, or malaria. virus disease is 3-10 days. Typically, the disease begins with an abrupt onset of fever (38-40°C) with headache ( that is often serious) chills, myalgia, and arthralgia. The symptoms of the virus last than a week which is about 2 to 7 days. However, in about 60 per cent of the patients the signs can reoccur a few days or even weeks later. Similar symptoms are reported on the relapse.

The symptoms of Oropouche virus disease can be similar to the symptoms of dengue chikungunya, or Zika viruses, or malaria.
