Explained: What is ‘XEC’ the new variant of COVID-19 identified in 27 countries

New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) on May 5, 2023, declared that COVID-19 is no longer a global health threat, despite this, the virus does not seem to have an end. After a number of varied variants and lineages of COVID-19 have been reported, people continue to face its effects. According to reports, a new COVID-19 variant called ‘XEC’ is rapidly spreading and has already been detected in 27 countries. This variant emerged as the repercussion of the global pandemic that majorly affected the world for over two years starting in 2019.

The virus has been identified as the ‘most contagious’ one by the scientists and due to this, they have raised the alarms. ‘XEC’ is often classified as the sublineage of the Omicron variant and is said to carry mutations that may speed up the transmissibility of the virus. XEC is a combination of strains that are derived from the Omicron sub-variant KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, with KS.1.1 which is currently the most dominant variant in Europe.

A report in the Independent noted that nearly 500 samples were collected that contained the XEC variant which has also been identified over 27 countries. These countries include Poland, Norway, Luxembourg, Ukraine, Portugal, and China. Moreover, the XEC cases have been visibly strong growthwise in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Denmark.
