Why black sesame seeds are essential in Pitru Paksha 2024 rituals

Mumbai: In Hinduism, the ritual of offering water mixed with black sesame seeds to ancestors during Pitru Paksha is an ancient and deeply significant practice. This period is observed as a way to express respect and gratitude towards those who have passed away, acknowledging their contributions and seeking their blessings. Black sesame seeds, in particular, hold great cultural and religious importance during these rituals, symbolising reverence and respect for the departed.

The belief is that when water mixed with black sesame seeds is offered to ancestors, it acts as a conduit of energy that reaches the ancestors, providing them strength. This tradition, passed down through generations, remains a key part of the Pitru Paksha rituals.

Pitru Paksha 2024 start and end date

According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha begins from Bhadrapada Purnima and lasts until the Amavasya of the Ashwin month. In 2024, Pitru Paksha started on Tuesday, September 17, and will continue until October 2, 2024. During this period, Hindus will perform Tarpan and Shraddha, essential rites conducted in honour of their ancestors.

Why Are Black Sesame Seeds Used for Tarpan?

Black sesame seeds hold a special place in the rituals of Pitru Paksha. The use of black sesame seeds in offerings to ancestors has been a part of the tradition for centuries. These seeds are believed to be an effective remedy for Pitru Dosha, or ancestral defects, and are thought to help in gaining the blessings of the ancestors.

Water mixed with black sesame seeds is said to contain the essence of holy sites, making it highly potent in satisfying the ancestors. The act of offering this water is believed to please the ancestors, who, in return, bestow blessings on their living descendants. Black sesame seeds are also seen as symbols of peace and liberation, and offering them is thought to bring solace to the souls of the deceased, guiding them towards salvation.

How to Use Black Sesame Seeds in Tarpan?

To perform Tarpan, black sesame seeds are mixed with water and offered to the ancestors at a sacred spot, such as the courtyard of the home. Some also mix the sesame seeds with Kusha grass, which is considered to be especially auspicious.

While making the offering, it is customary to chant the mantra:

“Om Shanti: Om Shanti: Om Shanti:”

After chanting, the water is slowly poured while taking the names of the ancestors. At the conclusion of the Tarpan ceremony, it is considered auspicious to donate black sesame seeds to Brahmins or the needy, as this gesture is believed to further please the ancestors.
