Explained: Why Tripura reported an outbreak of HIV cases, logged over 800 instances and 47 deaths

New Delhi: In a shocking report it has been found that Tripura is gripped with an alarming outbreak in HIV cases, with about 828 being infected and 47 deaths recorded in students.

But what led to this situation? According to a senior official of the Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS), around 828 students have been registered so far who are HIV positive, out of which 572 students are still alive and 47 have lost their lives because of the fatal infection, reported ANI.

The reason behind the spread of infection

As per the report, the AIDS Control Society has identified students from about 220 schools and 24 colleges and universities who take injectable drugs. The data was collected from a total of 164 health facilities across the state and the students were found to be addicted to intravenous drug abuse.

Most of the children who are detected HIV positive belong to educated and affluent families. There are also children whose parents are in government service and do not hesitate to fulfil the demands of the children. Their parents had no idea that their children fell prey to drugs until it was too late.

Needle sharing plays an important role in HIV transmission

HIV is frequently spread by sharing needles, syringes or drug-use tools with someone who is already infected with the virus. According to WebMD, sharing needles with other people increases the risk. When someone uses the else’s needle to inject drugs, steroids or other substances, you can come in contact with their blood. The virus causes AIDS transmits from one person to another via blood and other bodily fluids.

How does needle sharing expose one to HIV?

Apart from the original way of HIV transmission which is through unprotected sex, injected drugs also put one at higher risk of the virus. The are also other ways you can get HIV. Your risk increases due to multiple factors:

Preparing drugs with a needle that contains someone’s infected blood
Sharing water with someone’s used to clean out their needle
Reusing utensils, filters, or containers used to dissolve
Use the same filter another person used
