Explained! Why Yuzvendra Chahal is not part of squads for Duleep Trophy 2024-25

New Delhi: Yuzvendra Chahal was not named in any of the squads as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the teams for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25. The senior spinner was expected to feature in one of the four squads but his name was missing. Many fans were left surprised at his absence.

However, Chahal is not part of the Duleep Trophy squads for the first-round matches as he is all set to play for Northamptonshire in their last match of the One-Day Cup and their remaining five matches in the County Championship Division 2. Chahal will feature in Northamptonshire’s last game against Kent in the One-Day Cup.

Northamptonshire on Wednesday confirmed Chahal will link up with the rest of their squad on Wednesday, August 14 ahead of their trip to Canterbury for their match against Kent. The spinner was part of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 winning squad but was not picked in the ODI or the T20I team for the recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka.

Chahal, who became the first bowler to complete 200 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year, didn’t get a chance to play a game for India in the T20 World Cup 2024 with the team management preferring the trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja ahead of him. Chahal will be hoping to win back his place in the Indian team with his performances for Northamptonshire.

The senior India spinner has so far picked up 121 wickets in 72 ODIs and 96 wickets in 80 T20Is for India, however, he is yet to make his Test debut. Chahal will be hoping to make an impression on the selectors with his red-ball performances in the English county and make the cut in India’s Test squad ahead of the Bangladesh series next month.

Kuldeep, Axar and Jadeja to play in Duleep Trophy

In Chahal’s absence, India’s lead spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja will all be in action in the Duleep Trophy to prepare for the two-Test series against Bangladesh. However, senior spinner R Ashwin has been rested from the domestic tournament and will not play in the competition which is set to get underway from September 05.

Senior spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was not included in the squads for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25. His exclusion left many surprised. Here is the reason why he will not be taking part in the first round of matches in the tournament.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
