Kuwait: A four-member family from Thalavady in Kuttanad, Alappuzha district of Kerala, died in a fire at their residence in Abbassia, Kuwait, on July 19 night.
The deceased have been identified as Mulackkal Mathew (40), his wife Lini Abraham (38), and their children Irin (14) and Isaac (9). Mathew worked at Reuters, and his wife Lini was a staff nurse at Adan Hospital in Al Ahmadi Governorate. Their children attended Bhavans School in Kuwait.
According to relatives, the family had returned to Kuwait on the morning of July 19 after a month-long vacation. Mathew had been employed in the Gulf nation for the past 15 years, while Lini worked as a nurse.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the air conditioner at their residence. The family reportedly died in their sleep from smoke inhalation. Relatives are still awaiting official confirmation regarding the arrival of the bodies from Kuwait.
Earlier last month, 45 Indians perished in a massive fire at a labor accommodation in Kuwait’s Mangaf.
Recently, the Kuwaiti Fire Force (KFF) had urged citizens and residents to follow safety guidelines to prevent fires, especially as temperatures have surpassed 50 degrees Celsius.
KFF Director Brigadier Mohammad Al-Ghareeb emphasized the importance of possessing and knowing how to use fire prevention equipment, such as fire blankets, smoke and gas detectors, and fire extinguishers. He identified electrical faults from overloaded circuits as a major cause of fires and advised turning off unnecessary devices to prevent them. Al-Ghareeb also highlighted the hazards of gas stoves and stressed the importance of regular maintenance for vehicles and elevators.
