‘Feels like a slap’: Alex de Minaur on Australian Open loss to Jannik Sinner

New Delhi: Defending champion Jannik Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur by 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open on Wednesday, 22 January. The Italian took just an hour and 48 minutes to end the Australian’s best campiagn at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

De Minaur became the first Aussie player to qualify for the quarter-finals of the men’s singles at Melbourne Park since Nick Kyrgios in 2015. But Sinner outplayed him in a dominant display. This was De Minaur’s 10th consecutive loss against the Italian. Sinner broke the Australian six times and he only managed to win just 10 points on the Sinner serve.

De Minaur will retain his top 10 ranking after the Australian Open quarterfinals, where he reached for the first time. But he has now been knocked out at that stage at each of the last four grand slams. After the match, he admitted that he still doesn’t have the answers against top players.

The Australian said that he just need to sit with his team and figure out a way to hurt Jannik on the court. He further added that as a team they need to find different ways and at the moment they don’t have it.

De Minaur also praised his opponent and said that he has faced Sinner so many times and he’s not even surprised anymore when he faces him. “Matches like these happen. With the conditions a little bit slower and a little bit later at night, it’s pretty tough to make him miss or hurt him” said de Minaur.

“You feel like you just have been slapped across the face, to be honest, to finish off like that. If anything, it’s frustrating that I can’t do it. I’m doing my best, but I can’t make it into even a match where the crowd can get behind and start supporting” he added.

Alex de Minaur was disappointed after losing the men’s singles quarter-final to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open. The Australian tennis star said the loss to Sinner felt like a slap across the face.  Tennis Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
