New Delhi: European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) began their campaign in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 with a thumping 4-0 victory against La Liga giants Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, US, on Monday. Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored for PSG to help them ease past Atletico amid difficult conditions due to scorching heat in Pasadena.
Over 80,000 people turned up at the stadium to witness the newly-crowned European champions in action at the Rose Bowl, and PSG didn’t disappoint as they produced a remarkable display to make light work of Atletico Madrid. PSG got off to a flying start in the game and dominated possession in the first 15 minutes to keep Atletico at bay.
Ruiz found the back of the net in the 19th minute to put the Ligue 1 champions ahead. He unfurled a low strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to give PSG a 1-0 lead in the game. PSG came close to scoring at least twice in the next few minutes, but striker Goncalo Ramos was not clinical enough in front of the goal.
Portuguese midfielder Vitinha scored the second goal for PSG during the added time in the first half after running past the Atletico defence. Vitinha’s goal put PSG in complete control of the tie as they headed into the break with a 2-0 lead against Atletico Madrid.
PSG once again started well in the second half as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s bending strike nearly gave the French side a 3-0 lead. However, he was denied by Atletico keeper Jon Oblak, who pulled off a great save. Julian Alvarez scored for the Spanish giants, but the VAR disallowed his goal for a foul during build-up.
Problems intensified for Atletico Madrid when they were reduced to 10 men after Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute following a second yellow for showing dissent to the referee. Mayulu extended PSG’s lead to 3-0 in the 87th minute before Lee Kang-in converted a penalty from the spot in injury time to complete a comprehensive 4-0 victory for the European champions.
