Canberra: New workplace laws for Australian Parliament could see politicians facing fines or suspensions under proposed legislation, as per reports.
On Wednesday, the governing Labor Party introduced a bill to create an Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission (IPSC) aimed at addressing misconduct among politicians and staff. According to reports, the commission will be responsible for enforcing behavior codes, conducting workplace investigations, and imposing sanctions on members of both houses of Parliament, their staff, and other employees within parliamentary workplaces.
If misconduct is identified, the commission will have the authority to recommend fines of up to 5% of a politician’s salary or even recommend their suspension from Parliament.
The IPSC was initially proposed in 2021 following a report by the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, which revealed that 33% of individuals working in Commonwealth Parliamentary workplaces had experienced at least one incident of sexual harassment, and 37% had faced bullying.
