Investigation Launches into Teenager’s Death from Suspected Allergic Reaction to Costa Coffee

London: A 13-year-old girl, Hannah Jacobs, from Barking, East London, died last year on February 8th after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to hot chocolate purchased from Costa Coffee. An investigation is set to begin next week.

Hannah collapsed and passed away following a suspected anaphylactic reaction to the hot chocolate, which contained cow’s milk despite her mother’s request to replace it with soy milk due to Hannah’s dairy allergy. Hannah was allergic to multiple items, including dairy, eggs, fish, and wheat, since childhood.

After tasting the hot chocolate, Hannah realized she had been given the wrong milk and felt acute distress. Her mother rushed her to a pharmacy, where an EpiPen was administered to try and calm the allergic reaction. However, despite emergency services at the hospital, doctors were unable to resuscitate her, and she was pronounced dead at 11 PM.

A similar incident occurred in 2016 when Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died from an allergic reaction to sesame seeds in a Pret a Manger baguette. This led to the implementation of Natasha’s Law in 2021, requiring firms to label allergens used in pre-packaged foods prepared on their premises.
