Kochi, June 14 – Kochi international airport witnessed one of the most emotional moments it has never seen till date as 24 bodies were kept at the entrance for paying tributes before being moved to the home towns for their dear ones to catch the last glimpse.
Each one of them had embarked on journeys to Kuwait with hopes of a better life – dreams of higher incomes, comfortable homes, and their children’s education. However, they returned to their homeland not in pursuit of dreams but as mere remains, carried on the same flight that once held their aspirations.
The pain was palpable, with bystanders unable to do anything but witness the endless sorrow of those left behind.
As soon as the first set of caskets arrived, the family members were seen rushing towards the casket as they identified the names and photographs stuck on it. Bystanders and friends tried to console them with teary eyes.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who was present at the airport with other cabinet ministers and officials said, “The tragedy is an irreparable loss to the families. After the fire incident, the Kuwaiti government has taken all steps to help the Indian government in the repatriation of the mortal remains. The central government has also taken a proactive step by sending a union minister to Kuwait. We hope that the Kuwaiti government would take steps to ensure such incidents are not repeated.”
Most of the deceased in the fire mishap in Kuwait had left from their homeland with various plans so as to financially secure their family and ensure their children and elderly parents live peacefully and happily.
Ranjith K, a 34-year-old who had booked his flight ticket in July back home had his wedding fixed. Ranjith’s parents were busy preparing for the pre-marriage functions. But it all ended in a fire tragedy that has come as huge shock to his family and the small town of Perla where he lived.
Ranjith’s funeral will happen today a few meters away from his house. Many of his friends are yet to come out of the shock.
“Its very hard to believe that his funeral is happening near his house. His marriage was fixed and we were all happy for him. He has been in Kuwait for the past 10 years. He told us he is going to settle here with family”, said Ratheesh, friend of Ranjith in Kasaragod.
It is moreover the similar story for almost all of them whose life ended in a tragic fire in Kuwait during the early hours of June 12th.
Most of the family member who were approached were not in a position to speak as they were heartbroken. It was only few extended relatives and friends who spoke while contacted.
Last rites of seven of 11 of the 23 from Kerala will take place today while the rest will take place tomorrow.
