Fire tragedy: Of the 43 Indian deaths, 24 are Keralites, health minister Veena George leaves for Kuwait

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala health minister Veena George will be leaving to Kuwait following the fire tragedy that happened on June 12 Mangaf area in south Kuwait’s Ahmadi governorate leaving 43 Indians dead of which 24 are from Kerala. The minister and her team of officials will be coordinating with the Indian and Kuwaiti officials to ensure the speedy shifting of the mortal remains to their home town.

Meanwhile, one person named Binoy, a native of Chavakkad in Kerala is missing. As per sources Binoy is believed to have been trapped inside the building where the mishap took place. The decision was taken after the cabinet meet scheduled today in which the state government has decided to provide a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs to the family of the deceased and 1 lakh to the family of those who are injured.

LuLu group chairman Yousafali will be handing over Rs 5 lakhs and Kerala-based businessman Ravi Pillai will handover Rs 2 lakh each to the family of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

“The state government will provide all assistance possible for the families who have lost their dear ones. The health minster will have a team of officials who will assist here. We get the information that 24 Malayalees have died in the fire mishap”, said P Rajeev, Industries and commerce minister of Kerala.

According to sources in Kuwait, the toll could have been higher. Around 18 employees, who resided in the ill-fated building had a narrow escape as they had left the building around 4 A.M. for morning duty.

Families in disbelief as most of them had spoken to them before they went to bed

Families and friends of the deceased are in total shock and disbelief as most of them have been I touch with their dear one’s hours before the tragedy took place either through video call or through direct phones.

“Now, he was about to come home and this is what we had to hear. He used to involve in all local issues and is in good company with the locals here. It’s a very painful moment for all of us here”, said Shiva Prasad, a close friend of K Ranjith hailing from Trikkarippur in Kasaragod who lost his life.

Ranjith’s parents did not step out of the house ever since the news broke. Eerie silence prevailed near the house where he had built a year ago while he had come for his vacations. It is all the similar atmosphere prevailing in other houses where they have lost their dear ones in Kuwait.

Friends and locals in Adichanalloor in Kollam where Lucas, a 40-year-old who died in the mishap had fond memories of their dear friend who died in the mishap. Most of the family members of the deceased were unwilling to speak while TV9 reached out to them as they are unable to come out of the mental trauma they were undergoing following the news that trickled in on June 12.
