Five-year-old becomes world’s youngest to wear bionic ‘Iron Man’ arm

Five-year-old superhero fan, Jordan Marotta, is believed to have become the youngest in the world to receive a bionic “Hero Arm”.

Jordan, who was born without a hand, had used one prosthesis before but abandoned it due to its lack of functionality.

His mother, Ashley Marotta, said on Thursday (May 23) the new Iron Man styled arm allowed her son to control the fingers and grab objects with both hands, giving him an “instant confidence boost.”

Jordan was initially considered to be too young for the technology, but Ashley convinced robotics company Open Bionics, to meet them at their New York City clinic.

“Jordan is the youngest in the world and initially we were told he was too young and we convinced Open Bionics to see us and luckily he picked it up right away,” she said.

The custom-made “Hero Arm,” produced by UK-based Open Bionics, is a 3D printed prosthesis which uses myoelectric sensors that detect muscular contractions in the arm and convert them into intuitive bionic hand movements.

Open Bionics co-founder Samantha Payne said Jordan was the youngest person “to ever receive a multi-grip bionic hand.” The youngest recipient of the multi-articulating bionic hand before Jordan was six years old.
