New Delhi: Former India captain MS Dhoni became one of the latest inductees in the ICC Hall of Fame on Monday, June 09. One of the most successful captains to have led India and one of the greatest wicket-keeper batters and finishers of all time, Dhoni is only the 11th Indian cricketer to be honoured with an induction into the  ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, joining an elite list, including the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev among others.

Dhoni’s induction in the ICC Hall of Fame comes five years after he retired from international cricket. The 43-year-old wicket-keeper batter, who continues to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, played his final game for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Dhoni quit international cricket on August 15, 2020, nearly a year after playing his last game for India.

One of the most decorated Indian cricketers, Dhoni led India to unprecedented success as captain and finished his career with an impressive 17,266 runs and 829 dismissals in 538 matches across formats in international cricket. He remains the only Indian captain to have won all three ICC limited-overs trophies – the ODI World Cup, the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy.

The leader who transformed Indian cricket

Dhoni made his international debut for India in 2004 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the most exciting batters around the world at the time. His big-hitting ability, coupled with his unorthodox technique and ability to remain calm under pressure, made him a fan favourite. Dhoni’s batting talent was evident right from the start of his career as he smashed a stunning ton against Pakistan in Vizag in only his fifth ODI for India.

There was no looking back from there as Dhoni became one of the vital cogs in India’s middle order. He was appointed as India’s captain for the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 and led a young team to glory in South Africa after beating Pakistan in a thrilling final. The T20 World Cup triumph in 2007 marked the rise of Dhoni, the leader.

Dhoni soon took over as India’s all-format captain and led the team to incredible success, winning trophies and major tournaments, one after another. India became the no.1 Test team for the first time under Dhoni in 2009 and went on to win their second ODI World Cup title, ending a 28-year-long wait in 2011 after beating Sri Lanka in a memorable final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In 2013, Dhoni completed his cabinet of ICC limited-overs trophies as captain by inspiring a young Indian team to glory in the Champions Trophy in England. Apart from winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, Dhoni also led India to two Asia Cup titles in 2010 and 2016.

India also reached the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup and the semi-final of the 2015 ODI World Cup under Dhoni. He stepped down from Test captaincy in 2014 to hand over the baton to Virat Kohli in the longest format. Dhoni quit limited-overs captaincy in 2017, with Kohli taking over as India’s skipper across all formats.

The legendary MS Dhoni was inducted in the ICC Hall of Fame on Monday, June 09. The former captain becomes only the 11th Indian cricketer to join the elite list.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
