New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Anti-Corruption Unit appointed retired IPL officer Sharad Kumar as its new head. Shared, who was the previous head of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), brings in a wealth of experience in the concerned subject and is touted to be an asset for the BCCI’s critical unit.
The appointment for the post was done on October 1 by the cricketing body and on October 4, Friday, it has been made public. Hailing from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, 68-year-old Sharad Kumar has been named for a period of three years. His name was shortlisted in last month and after much thinking from the board, he was finalised as the new chief on September 29, in the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting.
Sharad’s distinguished career
Sharad is a 1979 batch IPS officer from Haryana cadre and has enjoyed a distinguished career in the police service, especially when he was chosen to become the chief of the National Investigation Agency. Sharad was at the helm of the NIA from 2013 to 2017. Sharad Kumar will take over the top role from KK Mishra, who also happens to be a former Haryana cadre IPS officer.
Mishra was appointed last year at the helm of the unit but did not complete his term due to unspecified reasons. Meanwhile, Sharad Kumar, after serving in the NIA, was appointed as the Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission from June 2018 to April 2020. In his new crucial role, Sharad will play a vital part in addressing corruption issues, which includes match-fixing and betting scandals, thereby reinforcing the BCCI’s commitment to maintaining integrity of the game.
Sharad Kumar’s immense contribution to the law enforcement has been recognised with the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services in 1996 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services in 2004.
