Former Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane announces retirement from football at 31

New Delhi: Former Real Madrid and Manchester City star Raphael Varane announced his retirement from football after suffering a serious knee injury at Serie A side Como. The 31-year-old recently ended his time as a free agent by signing for Serie A side Como this summer. The Frenchman’s debut was cut short after just 20 minutes as he suffered a serious knee injury.

Following the injury Varane sustained in the match against Coppa Italia clash with Salernitana he was dropped out from their final 25-man squad for the 2024-25 season. Reports emerged on Tuesday saying that Varane is considering hanging his boots instead of continuing his fight for fitness.

The French man announced his decision with a lengthy emotional post on Instagram. Varane reflected on his decision stating that all good things eventually come to an end and that he has “no regrets” about his career. The defender mentioned that his achievements and experiences give him great pride and satisfaction. He also expressed his desire to finish on a high note, with his second-to-last match and final full appearance being Manchester United’s FA Cup victory in May.

Varane even stated that he would remain with Como in a new role which he will reveal soon.
