Freak injury could lead to Alvaro Morata’s absence from Euro 2024 final

New Delhi: Spain won 2-1 against France in the first semi-final of UEFA Euro 2024 and are now waiting for either the Netherlands or England to play in the final. While Spain will appear in their fifth Euro final, a bizarre incident occurred, injuring the Spanish captain, Alvaro Morata.

After the game, a supporter managed to enter the pitch and joined the Spanish players in order to take a selfie as the team celebrated behind the goal. While trying to contain the situation and detain the dan, a security guard rushed towards the scene, slipped and collided with Morata.

The Spain forward was later seen limping and holding his knee. In the game, Morata was substituted in the 76th minute. Spanish manager Luis de la Fuente echoed every Spanish supporter’s concern. Everyone will hope he is fit to lead the team in the Euro finals on Sunday.

Morata is a seasoned campaigner in this tournament. Despite scoring Spain’s first goal in the tournament, he has since failed to score at all in any of the games. However, he is the one player who can deliver in crunch situations.

In the last edition of Euros, Morata had a tally of three goals, including a semi-final goal against Italy. As Spain hunt their fourth European Championship, the 31-year-old’s experience playing for the big clubs will be an asset as they head into the finals.

In Tuesday’s semi-final, France’s Randal Kolo Muani opened the scoring nine minutes into the game. However, Spain quickly counter-attacked and went into half-time, leading the game 2-1. Though Kylian Mbappe was close to equalling the efforts of  Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal, he couldn’t manage to level the score sheet.

Spain are the only team in this tournament who have won all five games.  They have scored 13 goals in this tournament, which is the most in Euro 2024 among all teams. They have also conceded the least number of goals in this tournament.
