Swiatek, nicknamed the ‘Queen of Clay’ because of her dominance at Roland Garros, has seen a dip in form leading up to the tournament. The five-time Major champion has not won a title – or even reached a final – since victory at the French Open 2024 12 months ago.
Can Swiatek go all the way?
However, Swiatek has shown shades of old in the ongoing tournament, and the win over Svitolina was the perfect display of her ruthless and relentless approach.
Swiatek, sealing her semi-final spot, said:
“I should have had better intensity at the beginning of the second set because Elina (Svitolina) is the kind of player that plays better under pressure. When she is losing she always steps up, so I needed to be ready for that. After I saw that happening, my intensity immediately went up. I wanted to be proactive and really lead in the game, so I’m happy I did that”.
Swiatek will next face top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal. The top-seeded Belarusian defeated Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 7-6, 6-3 to reach the last-4.
