New Delhi: World no.1 Aryna Sabalenka began her women’s singles campaign in the French Open 2025 with a commanding victory against Russian Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round of the tournament on Sunday. Sabalenka defeated Rakhimova 6-1, 6-0 to storm into the second round at Rolland Garros. Sabalenka, who lost the Australian Open final earlier this year, is aiming to reach her maiden French Open final this year.
Sabalenka produced a clinical show in the opening round to make light work of Rakhimova, wrapping up a dominant win in straight sets inside an hour to move to the next round. The world no.1 broke Rakhimova five times during the match and dominated the proceedings throughout the encounter to bag her third straight win against the Russian.
Sabalenka has so far come out on top against Rakhimova in all three meetings between the duo. Her 6-1, 6-0 win against the Russian also marked the seventh straight time that Sabalenka has reached the second round of the Australian Open. She will take on Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann or Italian qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini in the 2nd round for a place in the Round of 32 at Rolland Garros.
Sabalenka has never made it past the semi-final at the French Open and will be hoping to reach his maiden final this year. She reached the semi-finals of the tournament in 2023, where she lost to Karolina Muchova to miss out on a spot in the final. However, with four-time champion Iga Swiatek not in great form, Sabalenka has a great chance of going the distance in the French Open 2025.
