New Delhi: Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record-setting 25th Grand Slam singles title with a comfortable straight sets victory in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday.

The three-time champion defeated Mackenzie McDonald 6-3 6-3 6-3, only three days after registering his 100th ATP tour-level title triumoh at the Geneva Open.

Djokovic was in control in all aspects of his game and took one hour and 58 minutes to win at Court Philippe-Chatrier. It was Djokovic’s first career meeting with McDonald.

The Serb has now won all hos 20 first-round matches at Roland Garros, with te 38-year-old not dropiing set in his opening roun match at Paris since a four- sets win over Evgeny Korolev in 2010.

“I try to enjoy every moment on this very special and beautiful court. I feel good, clearly, even more here because I’m reliving the memories of last year’s Olympics, the last time I played on this court. [They are] beautiful emotions.

“It was a solid match. I know that he can play to a better standard than today, but I am very happy with what I produced,” Djokovic said after his win.

Dimitrov retires

Earlier in the day, Grigor Dimitrov’s retired from hia opening round match while leading. The 16th-seed has to pull out from his first-round clash against Ethan Quinn with an injury.

Dimitrov was ahead of qualifier Quinn 6-2, 6-3, 2-6 when his campaign ended in cruel fashion after receiving treatment on his left thigh in the second set.

The Bulgarian’s movement was restricted throughout the third set. Making his beut at Roland Garros Quinnfaces Alexander Shevchenko in the second round. Shevchenko beat Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(4) in his first round clash.
