New Delhi: Indian para shooter Manish Narwal claimed silver medal in men’s 10m air pistol SH1 shooting event on Friday (August 30) at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre in the ongoing Paris Paralympics. The 22-year-old Manish, who was the reigning Paralympics gold medallist coming into the event, scored a total of 234.9 in the eight-men final.
South Korea’s Jo Jeongdu won the gold medal with a score of 237.4 after a total shots of 24. China’s Yang Chao bagged the bronze medal with 214.3 from 22 shots. The event was held in two stages – Stage 1 and Stage 2. With the first stage including 10 shots followed by the elimination round (Stage 2).

Manish, who started the final with a 8.1 shot, finished the Stage 1 at fifth place with 92.7 in the 10 allocated shots. A consistency of aiming around the 10 with scores of 10.1, 10.4, 9.5, 10.4, 10 and 10.4 helped the Haryana-based para shooter claim the pole position after the completion of 16 shots.
But he couldn’t strike consistency with 9.9 and 9.8 shots, Manish slid to the second spot with Jeongdu gaining the advantage. Manish never regained the first-place after the slump on his 18th shot. He maintained to hold the second spot even though the scores weren’t breaching the 10-mark.
The final series, which was the decisive shot for a gold medal, saw Manish score 9.9 and 8.9, which wasn’t sufficient to catch Jeongdu for a gold medal. Hence, the Indian missed the chance to defend his gold medal won at the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago.
Shooters open India’s medal tally
Earlier in the day, women shooters Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal bagged gold and silver medals, respectively, in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1 event. The double-podium finish registered India’s first two medals in the event. It was a similar case in the Olympics where shooter Manu Bhaker won India’s first medal in the quadrennial showpiece event.
Indian sprinter Preethi Pal claimed bronze medal in the T35 women’s 100m event. The para athlete from Uttar Pradesh clocked 14.21s as her personal best timing to account India’s first medal in the track and field events in Paris Paralympics 2024.
