New Delhi: Every now and then you hear about a former Premier League star, years after his exploits in England’s top flight, make a move down the footballing league system of the country. Former Everton and Manchester City great and Premier League’s highest appearance maker, Gareth Barry did so earlier in the year when he joined Mid Sussex Football League side Hurstpierpoint and ex Manchester United goalie Ben Foster did the same when he joined Wrexham a few years back.
Making a similar move now, is former Tottenham and QPR defensive midfielder Sandro. The 35-year-old has come out of retirement to sign for Harborough Town in Leicestershire, a club plying their trade in the Southern League Premier Central, the seventh tier of English football. The midfielder last played in 2020, turning out for Brazilian side Goiás before announcing his retirement through an Instagram post in 2023.
Premier League fans might remember the midfielder for his tough-tacking and no-nonsense style of play that he showcased throughout his time in the league. He came to the country in 2010, joining Spurs from Brazilian side Internacional, in a deal reported to be around €10 million. He would go on to make 106 appearances for the club before joining fellow Premier League outfits like QPR and West Brom, joining the latter on loan. He also garnered 17 caps for the national team during 2009-2012, representing them at the 2012 Olympics.

Sandro’s unexpected return to football with Harborough Town stemmed from a chance encounter at a Tottenham Hotspur match. While working for Spurs at their stadium, a few fans approached him, commending his fitness and encouraging him to get back on the pitch. Their comments sparked something for Sandro, who began seriously considering the idea. He quickly inquired about the team’s details, expressing an enthusiastic willingness to join and contribute his experience.
The timing of Harborough’s remarkable run in the FA Cup seemed perfect for Sandro’s planned debut with him being officially registered with the club now. The club, for the first time in their history, secured a spot in the Second Round, where they are set to face League One side Reading on November 30. He told Sky Sports after his move, “I’m registered now. I will be able to play in that game, no problem, it will be a pleasure to play again for the first time in two years. I miss football and it will be great to be in the changing room again and to help this team.”
Reflecting on his decision, Sandro acknowledged he has missed the camaraderie of football and the unique energy of the locker room. Although he’s kept in shape during his retirement, he admits playing competitively will require a new level of readiness. Yet, he’s fully committed to stepping up, embracing this fresh challenge, and lending his expertise to Harborough’s journey.
