New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stated that civil aviation is expected to play a key role as a growth driver for the Indian economy while speaking at the Second Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation,
PM Modi highlighted the importance of the UDAN scheme which encouraged regional connectivity and democratised air travel in India. Air travel in India had received a fillip from the scheme which brought air travel within reach of lower-middle-class Indians, and saw 14 million passengers travelling by air, he added.
With an eye on job creation, the Centre is eyeing an expansion of the civil aviation sector with proposals in the pipeline for air taxis, said PM Modi. He proposed the idea of an international Buddhist Circuit during the conference to boost air travel.
