Gautam Gambhir takes charge, holds first practice session as Team India head coach – Watch

New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir started his tenure as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team on Tuesday in Pallekele. Team India, which reached the city on Monday for six-match white ball series against Sri Lanka, began their first practice session in presence of Gambhir, who succeeded Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the side.

The Indian team would be led by T20 specialist Suryakumar Yadav while Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain for the both the T20Is and ODIs. Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video on social media site X which displayed Gambhir in the leadership role along with the other team members.

In the video shared by the Indian cricket board, Gambhir can be seen on the field with the players showcasing his leadership role by suggesting the nitty gritty of batting. During his playing days, Gambhir was considered as one of the best batters in the Indian batting setup. While the video showcases Gambhir’s presence prominently, players like Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Rinku Singh can also be seen in the video practicing and undergoing fitness drills.

Earlier, the official broadcaster of the series Sony Network shared some clips of the Indian players entering the field for the practice session.

The first of the three T20Is will start on July 27 while the other two matches will take place on July 28 and July 30. The ODI series, meanwhile, will begin on August 2 with the last T20I scheduled for August 7. The selectors named strong squads for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour and also convinced veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to take part in the ODIs. The duo, along with Ravindra Jadeja announced retirement from the shortest format after the T20 World Cup 2024.
