New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir is all set to hold his first press conference as Team India’s new head coach which will be held in Mumbai on Monday. The press conference is highly awaited due to the beginning of the “Gautam Gambhir era” who is known for his no-nonsense attitude and thrives on just “winning”. His aggressive mindset has been a major reason why every Indian cricket fan is looking forward to the words he will speak at the presser in the new role.
There is already a lot that the India head coach will have to unveil in the presser and it is expected that he will be head-to-head with the current burning questions of the Indian cricket circuit. From the ODI and T20I squads’ selection for the Sri Lanka series to the highly debatable T20I captaincy allocation, Gambhir will surely be up against a barrage of arrows unleashed towards him. However, he is well known to tackle these questions and provide a straight answer.
The call to snub Hardik Pandya from the T20I leadership and selecting Suryakumar Yadav as Rohit Sharma’s successor has garnered mixed reactions from the fans and cricket pundits alike. Pandya, who served as the vice-captain in the T20Is for long when not the skipper, was removed from the role of deputy as well, which some feel is a harsh call on the all-rounder who was one of the heroes for India in their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. Shubman Gill was named as the deputy in both the ODI and the T20I series.
Gambhir’s public interaction is much awaited for the announcement of India’s new coaching staff as well. It is expected that Gambhir will name his coaching counterparts for the Sri Lanka series, who might assume the full-time role as well. The names of Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate have surfaced for the assistant coach roles while a recent report has claimed that instead of Morne Morkel, Sairaj Bahutule will serve as the interim bowling coach for the tour. However, none of them have been finalised by BCCI yet.
Gambhir might also be head to head with the questions over the tough calls of dropping Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma from the ODI and T20I format respectively, at a time when they both scored centuries. Also, the snub of Ravindra Jadeja from the ODI side has raised many eyebrows. Nonetheless, it will all be answered in the press conference that will be streamed live right from the event.
