Glad to have gifted joy to Bangladesh as we navigate through difficult times, says skipper Shanto

New Delhi: Tense situation prevail in Bangladesh after a political upheaval but skipper Najmul Hasan Shanto hoped their win over Pakistan would being smile to the faces of their people back home.

Bangladesh notched up their first win over Pakistan in Tests with a 10-wicket victory in Rawalpindi on Sunday.

Shanto termed the triumph a “special one” as his country is going through testing times now with an interim government taking over the reins of the government.

“It was a very important win for us because last month we had a difficult situation in Bangladesh. There are still some problems there but in Bangladesh we support each other and I am happy this win gives them a little bit of a smile on their faces,” he said after their victory.

“We are happy with our performance and we just want to give more joy to our people in the second match as well. It was a special victory for us especially given how we adjusted to the hot conditions and pitch here.”

Shakib ul Hasan, deposed MP in the previous Sheikh Hasina regime, played a pivotal role, sharing seven wickets with Mehidy Hasan Miraz on the final day as Pakistan were bowled out for only 146 runs in their second innings.

“I think Shakib and Miraz bowled very well today given the conditions and we knew that with a 90-run advantage Pakistan would be under pressure on the final day,” he said, adding that despite facing problems he contributed as a senior member of the team.

Masood defends selection

Pakistan captain Shan Masood faced criticism foe going into the Test with no specialist spinner and four pacers. They were undone by the spin duo of Shakib and Mehidy.

“We had anticipated the pitch to offer more assistance to the seamers. Looking at the pitch, we expected it to do more,” he said at the post match conference.

“If we played 3 fast bowlers, we would be pushing them to the limit and the spinner would be bowling 25-30 overs a day, which we wanted to avoid.
“We thought that with the weather, it may not even last the full 5 days. At the end of the day, we got it wrong,” he said.
