New Delhi: Glenn Phillips does only make an impact with the bat for the Kiwis but has developed a habit of delivering on crucial occasions with the ball as well. On the first day of the first Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Galle International Stadium, Phillips bowled an absolute ripper to get rid of Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva.
After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka started off on a light note as they lost openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka early on in the innings for 2 and 27 respectively. Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Matthews stepped up for a while for the home team before Chandimal was sent back to the pavilion for 30, paving way for Kamindu Mendis to join Matthews on the crease. Matthews too could not make much of an impact as he was dismissed after scoring 36 runs.

Skipper De Silva, who came onto the crease with an intent to rebuild for the Lankans, could not stay for long as he was sent back to the pavilion after a beauty from Phillips. The second ball of the 35th over bowled by the Kiwi bowler was pitched outside the off stump and De Silva attempted to hit a shot but was left completely deceived by the delivery. It was a beautiful off-spinner which came back in only to hit the off stump of the batter.

Meanwhile, after the skipper’s dismissal, Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis took charge of the Lankan innings taking the score beyond 250 runs in the third session of the play. While Kamindu scored a terrific century studded with 11 boundaries, wicketkeeper Kusal was ably supporting him from the other end. Five-down Sri Lanka would be eyeing a big score in the first innings to set the base in the match.
