Millions of Windows users worldwide are facing the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error, which causes their systems to suddenly shut down or restart. This issue is linked to a recent update from CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor, according to Microsoft.
The BSOD problem has impacted various sectors, including companies, banks, and government offices across the globe. In India, several airlines have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to inform passengers about the ongoing issue.
What is CrowdStrike saying?
CrowdStrike President & CEO George Kurtz addressed the situation, saying, “CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers.”
What is Microsoft saying?
Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and is working on “mitigation actions.” The company stated, “Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions.”
“We remain committed in treating this event with the highest priority and urgency while we continue to address the lingering impact for the Microsoft 365 apps that are in a degraded state,” Microsoft added.
Understanding the Blue Screen of Death
The Blue Screen of Death, also known as STOP code errors or black screen errors, occurs when Windows encounters a serious issue that forces it to shut down or restart unexpectedly. Users may see a message like “Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.”
This error can be caused by either hardware or software problems. If you’ve recently added new hardware and encounter a BSOD, try removing the hardware and restarting your PC. If you have trouble restarting, boot your PC in safe mode. For further assistance, you may need to update Windows through Windows Update, seek help from other sources, or restore Windows to a previous point.
