‘Gold medal is my dream’: Mahavir Phogat’s blunt take on Vinesh’s Congress move

New Delhi: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat took a big and bold step last week as she joined the Congress party along with fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia. While many appreciated and welcomed her decision to step into the political sphere, for many, this decision did not go well. Considering Vinesh’s wrestling prowess, people criticised her saying that it was too early for a wrestler of her stature and she could have easily participated at the 2028 Olympics.

While her entry into the political world will most certainly dilute her wrestling dreams, Vinesh’s uncle and wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat also thinks on the same lines. Phogat expressed his disappointment over Vinesh’s decision to join the Congress party, saying that the she could have postponed her decision untill 2028 Olympics. Phogat further said that her focus should have remained on earning the gold medal for India.

Gold medal is my dream, says Vinesh

While Mahavir Phogat acknowledged her achievements in wrestling, he said that the nation had hopes on her for a gold medal at the Olympics. He also said that her transition to politics was too soon and should have been delayed ideally. Phogat also said that he is extremely saddened by her decision as gold medal is his dream.

“She did very well in the Paris Olympics but got disqualified in the final. It is my personal opinion that she should participate in the 2028 Olympics. Gold medal is my dream; she did not get it but the people of India gave her immense love and they had expected a Gold from her. People were disheartened. The decision that she has taken, I am saddened by it that she had joined politics. But she could have taken this decision after the 2028 Olympics, it would have been better,” Mahavir Phogat told ANI.

Vinesh, who was just a match away from giving India a gold or silver in wrestling, faced disqualification for being 100gms overweight on the morning of the final match. Taking a dig at the Congress party, Mahavir Singh said that neither she nor Bajrang had any plans to move into politics as there were no discussions prior and how the political party managed it is unbelievable.
