In the world of athletics, India secured its first two medals on August 30, 2024. Avani Lekhara won a gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle category, while Mona Agarwal claimed a bronze in the same event. Continuing this winning streak, Manish Narwal earned a silver medal in the 10m Air Pistol category, and Preethi Pal brought home a bronze in the Women’s 100m race.
History of Athletics
The term “athlete” is derived from the Greek words “Athlos” and “Athlon,” meaning “one who competes for a prize.” Organized Greek athletic events date back to the 23rd book of Homer’s Iliad, where Achilles organized funeral games to honour his fallen friend, killed by Hector during the Trojan War. The modern Olympic Games evolved from these ancient track and field events. Some historians trace the roots of athletics to the 9th century BC, with running, jumping, and throwing competitions being among the oldest forms of sports, possibly even prehistoric in origin.
Paris Paralympics 2024
The Paris Paralympics 2024 began on 28 August and will conclude on 8 September. More than 100 members of the Indian contingent, including 52 athletes from various sports, participated in the Paris Paralympics opening ceremony. For the first time in Olympic history, the inaugural ceremony was held outside a stadium on Wednesday.
This year’s tournament has seen a reduction in the number of teams compared to previous Paralympics. Only eight teams are competing in each event, a significant decrease from the last Games, which featured twelve men’s teams and ten women’s teams.
