The all-important GST portal through which all Goods and Services taxes are filed has been malfunctioning inconveniencing lakhs of GST filers. It is experiencing technical issues and is said to be under maintenance. Though the GST portal was expected to become operational by 12 noon on January 10, 2025, it is still not working properly. The question now is whether an extension of the deadline to file GST will be granted to the tax filers since the glitch has taken place in the crucial run-up to the deadline for filing on Saturday.
Requests have been made to Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) so that an extension of the deadline is granted. However, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs is yet to come out with any notification in this regard.
Is GSTR 1 due date extended?
According to social media posts by various GST practitioners and experts many are unable to file their tax return (GSTR-1). As announced earlier, the deadline for submission of the taxes is Saturday, January 11, 2025 for the tax period of December 2024. The deadline is January 13, 2025 for QRMP filers for December 2024 tax period. Incidentally, the QRMP scheme (Quarterly Returns with Monthly Payment) is for taxpayers who file Form GSTR-1 and Form GSTR-3B returns on quarterly basis, while paying their tax dues on monthly basis through challans.
Is the GST site not working now
Reports state that the portal stopped functioning on Thursday, January 9, 2025. It has still not resumed working (till the afternoon of January 10, 2025). On January 9, the official social media handle of GSTN mentioned that “GSTN hereby acknowledges the issue being faced regarding GSTR-1 summary generation and its filing.” It also stated that the team of experts is working on the issue and will resolve it shortly. Incidentally, December 2024, the GST collection in the country stood at Rs 1,76,857 crore — a rise of 7.3% compared to the same period in 2023. This was the 10th month on the trot that GST collections exceeded Rs 1.7 lakh crore.
The crucial GST portal has become inoperative just when the deadline for filing monthly and quarterly GST returns is approaching. With the portal yet to revive past midday on January 10, 2025, the question is, will an extension of deadline for submission be considered.
