New Delhi: India’s long distance runner Gulveer Singh on Friday bettered the national record in the men’s 5000m discipline at the Boston University Terrier DMR Challenge 2025 in Massachusetts.
While racing at the Boston University Track and Tennis Centre, the Uttar Pradesh athlete clocked 12 minutes and 59.77 seconds to finish fourth in the event behind America’s Cole Hocker (12:57.82s), America’s Cooper Teare (12:57.97s) and Australia’s Jack Rayneer (12:59.43).
Gulveer qualifies for World Athletics Championships
The timing made Gulveer the first Indian track and field athlete to break the 13-minute mark in the 5000m discipline. Apart from setting the new national record, the Indian athlete also marked the new record in the Asian 5000m short track record.
This also helped him secure the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Championship, which required him to surpass the mark of 13:01.00s.

The feat comes just a week after the Asian Games bronze medallist shattered a 16-year-old record in the men’s 3000m indoor race at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational event in Boston. The Army man ran the aforementioned distance in 7:38.26s to break the record of his coach Surendar Singh (7:49.47), which was set in 2008.
Gulveer will also aim to secure his spot in the 10,000m at the world championship with the automatic qualification required is 27:00.00. In November 2023, the athlete bettered his national record in the 10000m event with a timing of 27: 14.88 seconds at the Hachioji Long Distance meet in Japan.
The Sirsa-born athlete claimed bronze medal in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games (event was held in 2023) with a timing of 28:17.21s.
