New Delhi: England batter Joe Root continued his record-shattering run with the bat in the first Test against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Root broke the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record with his unbeaten 23 in England’s second innings as the visitors defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets in the Test match to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.
En route to his 23-run knock, Root broke Tendulkar’s record for most runs by a batter in the 4th innings of Test matches. Tendulkar, the leading run-getter of all time in Test history, topped the run-scoring charts in the 4th innings with 1625 runs in 200 games. Root surpassed the Master Blaster during Sunday’s 1st Test against New Zealand.
With his unbeaten 23, Root extended his tally to 1630 runs in the 4th innings in 149 Test matches in his career so far. Former England captain Alastair Cook and ex-South Africa captain Graeme Smith share the third spot on the elite list with 1611 runs each. Former West Indies batter Shivnarine Chanderpaul completes the top 5 with 1580 runs in the 4th innings of Test matches.
Batters with most runs in 4th innings in Tests:
Joe Root – 1630 runs
Sachin Tendulkar – 1625 runs
Alastair Cook – 1611 runs
Graeme Smith – 1611 runs
Shivnarine Chanderpaul – 1580 runs
Root had earlier been dismissed on a duck in England’s first innings in the 1st Test. It was a rare failure for the England batter, who has been in sublime form in Test cricket over the last few months. However, Root’s low returns didn’t hurt England too much as they still managed to beat New Zealand convincingly to take 1-0 lead in the series.
