Gurbaz, Rashid Khan power Afghanistan to historic ODI series win against South Africa

New Delhi: Afghanistan defeated South Africa by 177 runs in the second ODI and won their first-ever bilateral ODI series against the Proteas at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Saturday, September 21.

Rashid Khan, Kharote shined with ball

Chasing the target of 312 runs, South Africa got off to a great start in the run-chase after captain Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi stitched a 73-run partnership for the first wicket in 14 overs. Omarzai dismissed Bavuma for 38 runs and after that, the South African innings completely fell apart as they lost 9 wickets for just 61 runs.

Rashid Khan ran through the Proteas batting line-up after removing De Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder. Rashid also became the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul on his birthday.

Nangeyalia Kharote also bowled a brilliant spell and took 4 wickets in the match. He got the wicket of Lungi Ngidi and won the match for Afghanistan.

Gurbaz century helped Afghanistan to post 311

Earlier, Rahmanullah Gurbaz notched up his seventh ODI hundred as Afghanistan scored 311 runs in the 50 overs. He scored 105 runs off 110 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and one maximum. Gurbaz stitched an 88-run partnership with Riaz for the first wicket. Aiden Markram gave South Africa the first breakthrough and removed Riaz for 29 runs.

But Gurbaz built another 101-run partnership with Rahmat Shah. Azmatullah Omarzai’s brilliant unbeaten 86-run knock powers the hosts to post a big total on the scoreboard. Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger, Nqaba Peter and Aiden Markram picked up wicket each. But Afghanistan’s all-round performance helped them to beat Aiden Markram and Co. in the second ODI.

‘Congratulations to the whole nation’: Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi congratulated the whole nation for the ODI series and praised the batters. He also lauded his spinners and said that he knew that they will deliver for the team.

‘Congratulations to the whole nation for this fantastic series win. Everyone in the team and throughout the country will be very happy with this win. I think all of them were good, the way Gurbaz started and then the partnership with Rahmat, and then Azmat took the momentum away from them. They started well but I knew when the spinners come on, they will deliver for me’ Hashmatullah Shahidi said in a post-match presentation.
