New Delhi: Makar Sankranti is one of the most loved festivals in India, celebrated with great zeal and excitement across the country. The festival signifies the end of the winter solstice and the start of longer, sunnier days. This event is associated with abundance, prosperity, and also the harvest season. It is the festival for gratitude and festivity. Falling on January 14 every year, Makar Sankranti is observed under different names and traditions in various parts of India.  It is known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, and Lohri in Punjab.

The festival carries deep cultural and spiritual importance. People often celebrate the festival by flying kites, taking holy dips in sacred rivers such as the Ganges, and offering prayers to the Sun (Surya devta) for blessings. It is also a tradition to eat culinary delights prepared from sesame seeds (til), jaggery (gur), and rice that symbolise warmth and togetherness.
