New Delhi: Harmanpreet Kaur will lead a 15-member strong Indian contingent which was unveiled on Tuesday for the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE from October 3. While Harmanpreet is at the helm of the affairs, star batter Smriti Mandhana has been named her deputy for the premier event.
Top-order batter Yastika Bhatia and spin all-rounder Shreyanka Patil have also been included in the squad but with subject to fitness. Earlier, the showpiece event was supposed to be held in Bangladesh but was later shifted to the UAE following socio-political unrest in the country. India, placed in Group A along with Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, will be aiming for their maiden T20 World Cup trophy.
Meanwhile, the squad features seasoned players like Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh behind the wickets. India will take on West Indies and South Africa in their women’s T20 World Cup warm-up fixtures in Dubai, the ICC confirmed. India will take on West Indies on September 29 while Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. are slated to play South Africa on October 1.
As expected, the Indian squad has a lot of spinners including Deepti Sharma, Asha Sobhana and Radha Yadav. Meanwhile, Pooja Vastrakar happens to be the only fast bowling all-rounder while Renuka Singh and Arundhati Reddy are the two specialist fast bowlers.
